In 2014, a major iCloud hack led to the leak of private photos of many celebrities, including Justin Verlander and his now-wife Kate Upton, causing a significant uproar on social media.
The 2014 iCloud Leak Scandal, aka “The Fappening” or “Celebgate,” involved accessing and distributing private photos of several high-profile celebrities.
Many had their private photos leaked, including Jennifer Lawrence, Kirsten Dunst, Kaley Cuoco, Victoria Justice, and McKayla Maroney.

Among others, Justin Verlander, a Major League Baseball pitcher, and his then-girlfriend, Kate Upton, a model, were among the prey of this hack.
Their intimate photos were leaked online, which caused significant media attention and public turmoil.
Despite the invasion of privacy, their relationship remained strong. They got engaged in 2016, married in 2017, and now have a daughter named Genevieve “Vivi” Upton Verlander.
The couple often shares sweet moments with her on social media. Moreover, the pair are often seen together at various events and games in recent days.
Justin Verlander And Kate Upton Chose to Keep Their Comments Minimal After The 2014 Scandal!
When the scandal broke, Justin Verlander chose to keep his personal life private, stating,
“I’m not going to comment on my personal life. I never have and I never plan on it. I keep my personal life personal.The focus for me is on the Detroit Tigers. I don’t want to take any focus away from this team and what we’re trying to accomplish. We’re in the middle of a pennant race. We’re trying to win a pennant. And all of my focus currently is on doing whatever I can to help our team win our division”
On the other hand, Kate described the incident as an invasion of privacy and stated that it was illegal.
She expressed how difficult it was for her and mentioned that she had considered deleting her social media because of the ordeal.
Additionally, stating,
This is obviously an outrageous violation of our client Kate Upton’s privacy. We intend to pursue anyone disseminating or duplicating these illegally obtained images to the fullest extent possible.
The scandal led to significant legal actions. Several hackers were identified and charged.

For instance, Ryan Collins and Edward Majerczyk were for their roles in the phishing scheme that led to the leaks.
Likewise, George Garofano received an 8-month sentence for breaching more than 200 iCloud accounts.
Emilio Herrera was sentenced to 16 months, and Christopher Brannan received a 34-month sentence for unauthorized access and aggravated identity theft.
Additionally, Apple also took steps to improve iCloud security, including implementing two-factor authentication and addressing system vulnerabilities.
