An AI-powered weapon detection system at Antioch High School in Nashville failed to detect a gun during a tragic shooting incident.
Recently, the system, known as , an AI-powered visual gun detection software could not identify the weapon due to the shooter’s location and placement of the camera.
The shooting resulted in the death of a 16-year-old girl and injuries to a 17-year-old boy, with the shooter ultimately taking his own life.
The incident has raised concerns about school safety and the effectiveness of AI-powered weapon detection systems.

The tragic incident at Antioch High School in Nashville occurred on January 22, 2026.
The shooter was 17-year-old Solomon Henderson, a student at the school.
He opened fire in the school cafeteria, killing and injuring another student before turning the gun on himself.

The shooting began when Henderson confronted Escalante in the cafeteria and shot her with a handgun. He then proceeded to shoot himself.
Two other students were injured: one was grazed by a bullet, and another sustained a facial injury during the commotion.
The gun used in the shooting was legally obtained in Arizona in 2026.

On the day of the shooting, Solomon arrived at school with his mother, contrary to initial reports that he took the bus.
He retrieved the gun from a restroom before entering the cafeteria and opening fire.
The report suggests that after he entered the cafeteria, from a nine-millimeter pistol within 10 seconds. It remains unclear how Solomon came into possession of the gun.
Regarding this tragic situation, Dr. Adrienne Battle, the Director of Metro Nashville Public Schools, shared a statement in an emailed form:
While we have been focused on addressing the immediate situation, we are committed to understanding how and why this happened and what more we can do to prevent such tragedies in the future, It’s important to remember that our schools have historically been safe places for learning, friendship, and growth. We cannot allow this tragedy to overshadow the positive experiences of our 80,000 students.
She further expressed deep sorrow for the Antioch High School community and the families affected by the loss.
Additionally, she commended the school staff’s quick and heroic actions in following emergency protocols, potentially preventing further harm.
Battle also thanked the Metro Nashville Police Department and Nashville Fire Department for their swift response.
She further stated the status of the school, explaining:
Antioch High School will be closed for the rest of the week. All other district schools will remain open this week, and school counselors will be on hand to provide support.
