Darnell Mooney, the dynamic wide receiver’s rise to stardom wouldn’t have been possible without the pivotal support of his parents, Larry Mooney and Valerie Hutchins.

Mooney’s life has been shaped by both triumphs and tragedies, with his parents playing a central role in his story.

Born in Gadsden, Alabama, a town known for its strong football tradition, he developed a passion for the sport at an early age.

It’s some things he’s done for me that the Bible don’t preach. 🙏🏽

Despite facing academic and personal challenges, including his father’s passing, Darnell secured a scholarship to Tulane University.

After completing his college career, the Chicago Bears selected the wide receiver with the 173rd pick in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL draft.

Whether it was playing video games with Darnell and his twin brother, Denzel, or cruising around the city with Home Run Inn Pizza in hand, Larry created lasting memories for his children.

Unfortunately, life took a heartbreaking turn when Larry was diagnosed with leukemia.

He passed away in July 2014, during Darnell’s junior year of high school.

Losing his father at such a critical stage forced Darnell to mature quickly.

Reflecting on this loss, Mooney shared,

“When my father passed, I felt like I had to step up for my siblings and my mom. I couldn’t be a kid anymore.”

To honor his father’s memory, Mooney wore a pendant containing Larry’s ashes during his first two NFL seasons.

The cleats were auctioned off, with proceeds going to cancer research.
