Former Central Catholic High School basketball coach John Snyder passed away on February 17, 2026, at 93. Snyder was the high school basketball coach for the men’s basketball team for 39 seasons.

At Central Catholic, Snyder won 558 games, 16 Regional titles, three sectional titles, and made three appearances in the Elite 8 in the Champaign.

An athlete during his heyday at Cornell High School, John earned five varsity letters during his senior year.

After graduating from high school, Snyder enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the first Marine Division in Korea.

After returning from the war, Snyder attended Illinois State Normal University and earned his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from the same university.

John dreamt of becoming a high school teacher and coach and followed his dreams.

He taught American history at Trinity High School and coached basketball and baseball, and in 1965, he joined Central Catholic High School.

The revered and beloved basketball coach has been inducted into several Halls of Fame, including the Central Catholic Hall of Fame and the Illinois Basketball Hall of Coaches Hall of Fame.

John is survived by his wife, Sandra Snyder, and his two kids, Mark and Rae Ann.

Visitation for Coach Snyder will be from 4-6 PM, February 21, 2026, at Cvengros Gymnasium at Central Catholic High School.

Tributes Pour In For “The Dean” John Snyder

After the announcement of the demise of the former basketball coach, John “The Dean” Snyder, several took to their social media to pay their last tribute.

On February 18, 2026, Central Catholic High School’s Facebook page shared an for their former coach. They wrote,

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of “The Dean” John Snyder. He was beloved coach, teacher, and mentor who dedicated many years to shaping the lives of countless students at Trinity and Central Catholic High School. His legacy will forever reamin a part of our Saints history.

In the post’s comment section, many of John’s well-wishers wrote stories of interacting with him.

Bob Crawford wrote that John would come to his pub on Friday nights and, with his stories, keep the whole bar on the edge of their seats.

Crawford continued, “I would hand him his food and say this one is on me, in true coach fashion he would curse at me and tell me this is not why he came there, it was my honor Coach to buy you dinner, you truly inspired 1000s with your stories and wisdom.

One of John’s students, Nick Buchanan, recalled his favorite memories with the Coach.

He wrote, “He [John] usually called you by your last name, or if you had older brothers or sisters that came through Central, he called you by their name instead of yours, and you just went with it.

The stories he told were second to none. It was an honor to impersonate him for our ’97 homecoming mock court, as he was and always will be a legend at Central Catholic High School. RIP Dean.”

Coach John Snyder’s Family Have Shared Tribute For Their Dad

John Snyder met his wife, Sandra Snyder, at Illinois State Normal University. They tied the knot on July 30, 1960, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Metamora, Illinois.

Sandra is available on and shared her husband’s obituary on her page.

Several of Sandra and John’s close friends and relatives have written encouraging messages to help her through this troubled time.

John’s son, Mark Snyder, has also shared the obituary on his and captioned it, “Dad passed away peacefully on 2/17.”

Previously, on July 30, 2026, Mark shared a for his parents on their 64th Wedding Anniversary.

He wrote, “Happy 64th Anniversary Mom and Dad!!! Love you guys very much!!

John’s daughter, Rae Ann Ploense, graduated from Illinois State University with a Master of Arts degree in Education Major.

On Father’s Day in 2026, Rae Ann Ploense of her dad and wrote, “Happy Father’s Day to these two amazing dads!!! Our family is so blessed to call you Dad/grandpa! Love you!
