Angel Reese recently revealed that she is part of native origin from her father’s side of the family, raising curiosity about the details of her parents.
Born on May 6, 2002, in Randallstown, Maryland, the Chicago Sky star power forward was born to her mother, Angel Webb Reese, and father, Michael Reese.
Their influence shaped not only her career but also her approach to life.
A Basketball Legacy
Basketball runs deep in the Reese family. Both Angel’s parents played collegiate basketball, passing down their love for the sport to their children.
Her mother, Angel Webb Reese, played for the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Retrievers and was inducted into the UMBC Athletics Hall of Fame.
She later played professionally in Luxembourg.
Angel’s father, Michael Reese, played at Boston College and Loyola University before playing overseas in Luxembourg, Cyprus, Austria, and Portugal.
“My mom taught me how to play,” Angel shared in an interview.
“I tried ballet, gymnastics, and other things, but basketball was the only thing that worked for me.”
Her mother’s influence extended beyond the court. As a single parent, she raised Angel and her younger brother Julian, instilling a strong work ethic and sense of independence.
Angel’s competitive nature, honed by playing against Julian on the family’s driveway basketball court, became a cornerstone of her success.
Sibling Rivalry And Support
Julian Reese, born a year after Angel, has carved his own path in basketball.
A collegiate player at the University of Maryland, he also honors their shared family legacy by wearing the No. 10 jersey—the same number their mother wore.

Angel has often spoken about how their sibling rivalry pushed her to become better.
She recalled,
“We were always competitive. It shaped me into the player I am today.”
Overcoming Challenges
Life wasn’t always easy for the Reese family. After her parents separated, Angel’s mother took on the responsibility of raising her children alone.
Despite the challenges, she remained a pillar of strength and guidance for Angel and Julian.

She shared in a 2026 interview,
“Looking at her, I saw how she never backed down from anything. She paved the way for me.”
A Connection To Heritage
Angel Reese’s story also includes connections to her paternal family and heritage.
In a recent TikTok live, she revealed that her grandmother on her father’s side had Native American roots.
Though her relationship with her father was distant, she acknowledged the impact of his family’s history.

“My dad and my grandma said she’s part-, half-, something Indian. It’s a unique part of who I am.”
