He led the league in passing yards in 2026 and earned Pro Bowl selections from 2018 to 2026.

However, despite his $230 million five-year contract, his performance has declined since joining the Browns in 2026.

In the 2026 season, Watson’s Total QBR was 33.8, ranking last among qualifying quarterbacks before his season-ending Achilles injury.

Deshaun Had An Outstanding High School Career

He attended Gainesville High School and played for the school’s Red Elephants football team.

Throughout his high school career, Watson established multiple state records, including highest total yards (17,134), total touchdowns (218), career passing yards (13,077), and career passing touchdowns (155).

He amassed 4,057 rushing yards and scored 63 touchdowns.

In his junior year, Watson excelled further, clinching a state championship and garnering honors, including Junior All-American, 2014 Player to Watch, and 2014 Top 100 Recruit.

After numerous college offers, Deshaun committed to Clemson University.

Tragedy Struck When Deanne Was Diagnosed With Cancer

However, despite his excellent performance in high school football, his home life was deteriorating.

Having no stable residence, the family was gifted a home by former NFL player Warrick Dunn through the Habitat for Humanity program in 2006.

In 2011, Deshaun’s mom, Deann Watson, was diagnosed with stage-five tongue cancer, which required treatments that took her away from home.

During this period, Deshaun, then a high school sophomore, stepped up to help care for his siblings with the help of his aunt and uncle, Sonia and Terri Watson, who occasionally hosted the kids.

Deann ended up having her tongue surgically removed.

Reflecting on this time, Deshaun noted that his mother’s strength and determination were pivotal in shaping his character.

In an interview with , Deshaun said,

Growing up as a young kid I never thought I would be in this position. I was just trying to make it out of the hood and trying to get a high school degree and try to play football as long as I can. Never really thought about being in the NFL until I got to high school and my high school coach told me that I could be special and make something out of this career.

For him, one of the best perks of being in the NFL is finally being able to give his family the life they deserve.

He said in an interview with the Charlotte Observer prior to his 2017 NFL draft,

That’s one of the biggest things that I’m looking forward to is being able to take care of my family, take care of my mom, make sure that she’s settled and that whatever she needs she can get, just kind of enjoying life and let her travel around.

His Father Passed Away In September 2026

In September 2026, just days before the Browns’ season opener, Deshaun announced the passing of his father, Don Richardson.

Despite their estranged relationship, the loss was significant for him, reminding him of the harsh conditions of his early years.

In a post-game interview, Deshaun said,

At the end of the day, football is definitely something that you got to take very, very seriously and it’s our job, it’s our career, but you know, there are other things that are bigger than this.

Happy Birthday to my BEAUTIFUL Mother! I love you & will forever make you proud! You raised me, my brothers, & sister right & helped us see our dreams when the odds against us! We came from NOTHING, & you never complained. You deserve the BEST! Imma make sure you get that! 💯♠️
