After recently replacing Coach Pete Carroll and being appointed as the Seahawks head coach, people are curious about Mike Macdonald, including his family background and ethnicity.

Mike’s reputation as a straight-A student and “smart kid” made his decision to pursue coaching unexpected for many around him as it was out of character.

However, with his dedication, McDonald’s has been making waves in the NFL coaching landscape.

is an American football coach currently working as the head coach for the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL. 

Macdonald attended the University of Georgia, graduating summa cum laude in finance. Moreover, he also earned a master’s degree in sport management in 2013.

The Seahawks’ coach started his career as a graduate assistant at Georgia in 2010 and quickly coaching ranks. Notably, he had an impactful seven-season tenure with the Baltimore Ravens from 2014 to 2026.

Later, in January 2026, Macdonald joined Michigan as a defensive coordinator before returning to the Ravens, where he again worked as a defensive coordinator in 2026.

Finally, his career reached new heights in 2026 when he was named the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks at the age of 36.

Mike was born on June 26, 1987, in Boston, Massachusetts. Despite being born in the Boston area, Macdonald’s family relocated to Atlanta as a child due to his father’s career in business.

Being born and raised in the US, Mike Macdonald is of American nationality.

Regarding his parents, his father’s name is Hugh Macdonald; however, his mother’s name is unknown.

Nevertheless, in one of the interviews, he once mentioned his parents and their role in his life. He said his mother “has taught me if you’re going to do something, you’d better do it right.”

Furthermore, he also said that his father, Hugh, instilled in him the belief that “integrity, humility, and determination” will always pay off in life.

Macdonald’s Father Was Against His Football Coach Career Initially

When Mike first told his father, Hugh, that he wanted to pursue becoming a football coach, his father was skeptical because “it was unlike Mike.” Hugh described Mike as an ‘analytical’ kid. 

Mike excelled in high school as he was a straight-A student. Moreover, he also graduated from the University of Georgia’s business school.

As Mike’s father Hugh came from a business background, , “I looked at the life of a coach versus the life of someone in corporate America. Coaching is a tough, tough world. I encouraged him to go into business at that point. I was really not initially for it.”

Upon talking to his father, Mike pondered it a lot. He also talked to a business leadership professor at his college and sought advice.

However, Mike decided to go for it. He said, “But I ended up just being like, ‘What are you doing? This is where your heart is at. If you’re 40 years old and you didn’t give it a shot, you’re not going to be able to live with yourself.'”

Despite initial skepticism, Hugh later respected Mike’s decision, seeing his dedication. Hugh also said Mike was not a kid he had to worry about, and he didn’t make many rash decisions.
