Emmanuel Mudiay: Early Life, Family & Education

Emmanuel Mudiay was born to Jean-Paul Mudiay and Therese Kabeya in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo on March 5, 1996.

At the time of Mudiay’s birth, Congo was a war zone. Mudiay’s father passed away when he was a toddler. As a result, he has to face many difficulties during the Second Congo War as a child.

Eventually, the family fled to the United States to get relief from the harsh living conditions in Congo. 

Family

Mudiay’s father passed away when he was just a little boy. As a result, his mother was solely responsible for all three children. He has two older brothers, Stephanie Mudiay and Jean-Micheal Mudiay.

During the Second Congo War, the family had to face a lot of troubles. They even have to worry about food and lodging. There was not much income in the family as his mother could only grow coffee and vegetables to meet their needs. 

For a better future and in search of stability, Mudiay’s mother planned to flee to the United States in 2001. A year later, Emmanuel and his two older brothers joined their mother. His older brother Stephanie took care of the younger siblings.

Mudiay could only speak French when he first arrived in the United States. Eventually, he learned the English language and got comfortable with the new environment.

Emmanuel’s older brothers Stephanie Mudiay and Jeal-Micheal Mudiay also played college basketball but never played professionally.

Stephanie could not continue because of the back injury. Jean-Micheal played two seasons at SMU but could not mark himself as a star player.

Emmanuel has a cousin named Moses Ehambe, a professional basketball player in LNB Pro A.

Education

Mudiay went to Grace Preparatory Academy, Arlington, Texas. In his final year of high school, he transferred to Prime Prep Academy in Dallas, Texas. 

In 2013, he committed to SMU Mustangs but later joined the Guangdong Southern Tigers in China and left the university.

High School Career

Emmanuel Mudiay did his schooling in the USA after fleeing from his home country. He joined Grace Preparatory Academy in Arlington, Texas. 

Mudiay started playing basketball in his freshman season. He scored 16 points in the 2011 TAPPS Class 4A Final. His team defeated Westbury Christian School which was two times champions. 

In his final year of high school, Mudiay transferred to Prime Prep Academy in Dallas, Texas. He played very well in his final year and was praised by the coaches. 

Mudiay was ranked the second-best recruit in his class by Rivals.com. In addition, he was one of the best candidates for the upcoming NBA draft.

In 2014, Mudiay committed to the Chinese Basketball Association and decided to leave college.

Professional Career

Guangdong Southern Tigers (2014-2015)

Mudiay joined the Guangdong Southern Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association on July 22, 2014. It was a one-year contract with a remuneration of $1.2 million.

At the end of 2014, Mudiay suffered from an ankle injury and had to rest for the rest of the games. 

He could only play 10 regular-season games for Guangdong Southern Tigers until the injury. Then, on March 1, 2015, Mudiay was back in action in Game 3 of their semi-final series. Guangdong was up against Beijing Ducks. 

In the best-of-five series, Guangdong lost 3-1. Mudiay played 10 regular seasons and two playoffs. He scored 18 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. 

Denver Nuggets (2015-2018)

Mudiay returned to America after his contract with Guangdong Southern Tigers ended in 2015. He was selected in the 2015 NBA draft by the Nuggets with the seventh overall pick.

Mudiay played in the 2015 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. He was named to All-NBA Summer League second team. 

On July 31, Mudiay signed the contract with the Denver Nuggets. Finally, he debuted as a season opener for the Nuggets on October 28. He scored 17 points and 9 assists in a 105-85 win against Houston Rockets. 

Denver Nuggets lost to Phoenix Suns on November 20, but Mudiay showed his best game with 26 points and 5 assists. He played 23 games for the Nuggets straight before suffering an injury.

Mudiay sprained his right ankle on December 11, and he had to miss 14 straight games. On January 10, he was back in the game scoring 11 points and 6 assists against the Charlotte Hornets in a 95-92 win. 

Mudiay replaced in the NBA All-Star Weekend Skills Challenge on February 11. On March 10, he recorded his career-high of 30 points against the Phoenix Suns. 

Mudiay played a major role in a match against the Philadelphia 76ers. He scored 27 points and 11 rebounds. With his 35-foot “rainbow” shot, the Nuggets won over 104-103. 

By displaying excellent games in the season, Mudiay earned NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors. In addition, he was in the USA Men’s Select Team during the 2016 off-season. 

Mudiay recorded 24 points leading Nuggets to victory over Boston Celtics on November 6, 2016. In addition, he achieved a career-high of 13 assists on January 16, 2017, against Orlando Magic.

He made 41 starts in the first of the 2016-17 season. 

New York Knicks (2018-2019)

Emmanuel Mudiay joined the New York Knicks on February 8, 2018, as part of a three-team contract, including the Denver Nuggets and the Dallas Mavericks. Mudiay recorded 14 points and 10 assists under New York Knicks against the Indiana Pacers. 

At the start of the 2018-19 season, Mudiay was out of the game for two weeks because of his right ankle injury. However, he was back in action on December 14 and scored a career-high 34 points against Charlotte Hornets.

After three days, the Knicks lost the match against the Phoenix Suns, where Mudiay scored 32 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists.

As we know, injury is inevitable while playing sports. Unfortunately, Mudiay has also suffered from the same fate many times in his career. He suffered a left shoulder strain on January 25 and was out for two weeks missing 12 games.

Mudiay also missed the last two games because of an injury. However, he ended the season as a leading scorer for the New York Knicks with 14.8 points per game. 

Despite all ups and downs, Mudiay became one of the best shooters in the mid-range in NBA throughout the 2019-2026 season.

Utah Jazz (2019-2026)

After playing for New York Knicks for a year, Mudiay joined Utah Jazz on July 20, 2019. He felt that he could improve his game and learn from his seniors on the team. 

Mudiay was selected to the roster of the Portland Trail Blazers for the 2026 NBA Summer League.

Zalgiris Kaunas (2026)

Mudiay signed one year contract with Zalgiris Kaunas on August 23, 2026. But he could not perform well in the games, so the contract ended on November 2, 2026. 

Sacramento Kings (2026)

Mudiay agreed on a 10-day contract with Sacramento Kings on December 22, 2026.

Emmanuel Mudiay: Injury

In 2014, Mudiay had an ankle injury while playing for Guangdong Southern Tigers. He missed out on three games.

Again in 2015, Mudiay sprained his right ankle. He was in Denver Nuggets and had to miss 14 straight games. Despite the break from injury, Mudiay played well in the rest of the games.

In 2018 he played for the New York Knicks while his left shoulder strained. As a result, he had to miss out on 12 games. Injury has been a part of his career. 

Mudiay had a knee injury in 2026 playing for Zalgiris Kaunas, but he continued the game as it was not a serious injury.
