Former Steelers Super Bowl Champion Mike Collier Passes Away At 71, Leaving Behind Wife and Kids

Michael Jerome Collier, a former Pittsburgh Steelers running back and Super Bowl champion, passed away on February 16, 2026, at 71.

He died . Collier is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Lisa Benningfield Collier, and their three children: Mike, Tiffani, and Jerome. The family also includes six grandchildren, whom their grandfather cherished.

Collier was born in Baltimore on September 12, 1953, to Doris and Sylvan Collier Sr.

He attended Morgan State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in physical education.

His football career began when the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted him in the 14th round of the 1975 NFL Draft.

During his rookie season, he scored three rushing touchdowns and contributed significantly to the team’s success.

Despite being a Steelers running back for just one year and behind Franco & Bleier, he still found ways to contribute.

Most impressively, Collier made a number of key returns in Pittsburgh’s 1975 Super Bowl season, including this 94-yard TD.

In Super Bowl X, Collier played a crucial role in helping the Steelers defeat the Dallas Cowboys.

In an important season during the fourth quarter, he returned a free kick that set up the game-winning field goal, securing his place in Steelers history as part of a championship team.

After two seasons with the Steelers, injuries led him to spend three additional seasons with the Buffalo Bills before retiring from professional football.

Lisa Benningfield Collier is originally from Hodgenville, Kentucky.

She graduated from North Hagerstown High School and has been a steadfast partner to Mike since their marriage on August 15, 1980.

Lisa worked at Spielman Title Service and has been known for supporting Mike during his professional career and their family life.

The Colliers raised their children with love and dedication. Their son Jerome is now the owner and CEO of Dark Dimension Car Wash and Detailing.

The family has always been close, and Lisa and Mike have established strong values in their children.

They have also enjoyed being active grandparents to their six grandchildren. Lisa ensured their grandchildren and children could congregate and flourish in a cozy house.

After retiring from the NFL in 1979 due to injuries, Mike remained involved in sports by coaching local youth teams in football, basketball, and baseball.

He worked as a grocery store manager until his retirement in 2026.

In addition to his coaching duties, he participated in autograph signings for local charities and was known for his kindness within the community.

Jerome Collier’s wife, Jennifer Rice-Collier, shared a heartfelt tribute to Michael, expressing her love and promise to support his family.

Jeanetta expressed her appreciation for having him through a touching social media message,

Many others have shared their condolences, highlighting Mike’s generosity and warmth.

One of Jerome’s colleagues expressed her heartfelt condolences to him and the Collier family, writing,

“ is a good friend of mine. We worked together at Kohls for along time. Please pray for him and his family as the grieve for the loss of this amazing man. Jerome we love you and we’re here for you with anything you need. “

One friend noted how he had allowed her son to try on his Super Bowl ring, explaining Mike’s approachable nature, and wrote,

“I will always appreciate this man. He was so kind to my son. He allowed him to try on his Superbowl ring. Mike was a fixture in Hagerstown Md. He worked as a store Manager of a local Martins (Giants) store. Always smiling, and showing off his Rookie card.”

A Celebration of Life for Mike Collier will occur on Saturday, February 22, 2026, at Rest Haven Funeral Home in Hagerstown, Maryland. Additionally, the visit will be held from 11 AM to 1 PM before the service at 1 PM.

Mike Collier’s legacy as a former Steelers Super Bowl champion extends beyond his achievements on the field.

It also shows in his loving family life and community involvement. Those who knew him best will remember his contributions to youth sports and local charities fondly.
