Nicknamed ‘The Golden Bear’, Jack Nicklaus exchanged vows with his wife, Barbara Nicklaus, on July 23, 1960, in Columbus, Ohio.

The retired professional golfer and golf course designer is widely recognized as one of the greatest players in golf history.

Born on January 21, 1940, the elite athlete embarked on his professional journey at 21 and is celebrated for his remarkable skills on the course.

With 18 major championship titles, is considered the most successful pro golfer of all time.

If you didn’t know, the golf legend didn’t intend to pursue the sport as a career. He attended Ohio University with a pre-pharmacy major to follow his father into the pharmacy field.

Later, when his amateur golf achievements mounted, he turned professional to support his growing family.

The power couple, Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, first met during their freshman year at Ohio University in 1957.

Jack was in an open relationship with Barbara’s friend Mary at the time, so he approached Barbara and asked her out on a date.

Barbara didn’t immediately agree, as Jack recalled mentioning,

She couldn’t work me in for about two weeks. Meanwhile, she fixed me up with a couple of girls who she knew I wouldn’t like.

The college sweethearts dated for a while and eventually broke up, but after a nudge from Jack’s family, they united and rekindled their relationship.

Jack proposed to Barbara during Christmas in 1959, and the couple tied the knot in 1960 between their junior and senior years at University.

Since then, the love birds have never looked back and have been each other’s rock through thick and thin.

Moreover, the devoted pair are proud parents of five children: Jack, Steven, Nancy, Gary, and Michael Nicklaus.

As of 2026, the loving couple has been blessed with twenty-four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The couple revealed that the secret to their enduring relationship lies in a pact they made early in their marriage.

Throughout his career, , always ensured not to stay away from his family for more than two weeks, allowing him to spend quality time with them.

This speaks highly of Jack’s character as a family man who prioritizes his wife and children over anything else.

Additionally, the golfer announced Barbara as the Honoree for the 50th Memorial Tournament, a gesture that meant a great deal to both of them.

The Couple Founded Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, Driven by the Tragic Loss of a Grandchild

Born on February 28, 1940, Barbara Nicklaus is widely known as the “First Lady of Golf”.

Jack and Barbara Nicklaus have actively dedicated themselves to charity work, earning them widespread recognition for their efforts.

The elite couple established the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation in 2004 to enhance healthcare for children.

Furthermore, they have reportedly raised approximately $150 million since the foundation’s establishment.

Originally, the couple began their service for children after their daughter experienced a medical emergency at 11 months old.

However, their philanthropic efforts were further motivated by the heartbreaking loss of their 17-month-old grandchild, Jake Nicklaus.

As a result, her years of dedicated service earned her membership in the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame in 2026.

During the ceremony, she expressed,

I am deeply humbled and honored to be chosen to be inducted into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame. It is truly special to be included with such an esteemed group of women. We feel blessed to live in the great State of Florida – and blessed to be able to ‘give back’ to children and families in need.

Jack, filled with pride, took to his Instagram to show his admiration and joy for his wife, reflecting their profound bond.

The love birds have consistently praised each other throughout the years, showing their unconditional love and support.
