Jim Tyrer would’ve likely been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980, but with the tragic murder-suicide died his dreams.

Furthermore, on September 15, 1980, Jim Tyrer murdered his wife Martha before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life.
Brad Tyrer, along with his three siblings, Stefanie, Jason, and Tina, witnessed the tragic demise of their parents.
A report later revealed that Jim Tyrer suffered from Chronic traumatic encephalopathy at the time of his demise.
Moreover, two days before his demise, Dr. Douglas Paone noted that Tyrer was having headaches, abdominal pain, and a general feeling of not being himself, but he couldn’t find the cause of Tyrer’s disease.
Dr. Douglas later stated that Martha Tyrer grabbed him by the arm while exiting the office and said, “there’s something wrong with Jim, he’s just not the same.”
Despite the tragic demise of Jim and his wife, Martha Tyrer, their son Brad, along with his siblings, continued to keep their late father’s legacy alive.
After 45 years out of Hall of Fame consideration, in 2026, was named a Senior finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026, marking his first full-board consideration since 1981.
In an interview with ESPN, Brad Tyrer stated that he and his siblings were “very disappointed” that their father didn’t get into the Hall of Fame, but they are grateful for the people who helped bring his name back into consideration.

In an interview, Brad Tyrer stated, “We’d go out to dinner as a family. He was very recognizable,” remembering his late father’s legacy.
Brad Tyrer watched his father become an NFL legend, a six-time first-team All-Pro with the Kansas City Chiefs, and a Super Bowl winner in 1970.
He also when his life took a tragic turn; Brad Tyrer stated that his father, Jim, came to his bedroom at about 9 o’clock and had a talk with him the day the tragic murder-suicide took place.
Brad stated:
“He came to my bedroom at about 9 o’clock and he had a talk with me that you would have with your kids if you knew you were never going to see them again.”
He further added as a 17-year-old teenager, he didn’t get the message and stated the man who committed the horrific act wasn’t the man he knew as his father.
Brad Tyrer also stated that he is grateful and blessed to have two great parents for 17 years.
Similarly, Jim Tyrer’s story will soon be told in a three-part documentary, “Beneath the Shadow,” directed by Kevin Patrick Allen.
Jim Tyrer’s eldest son, Brad Tyrer, has been serving as the District Sales Manager of Medtronic Spine and Biologics in Louisville, Kentucky, for over 26 years.
Brad attended Rockhurst High School and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a bachelor of arts and communications degree in 1986.
Moreover, Brad Tyrer also followed in his late father’s footsteps in football for a while and showcased his exceptional football skills playing for the Nebraska men’s football team.
