The Waupaca, Wisconsin, community is grieving the sudden loss of Leif Berrens, a vibrant 6th-grade athlete whose passion for baseball and football touched many lives.
Leif, a passionate baseball and football player, passed away at a young age, leaving his family, friends, and teammates in deep sorrow.
While the exact cause of his death remains unknown, the outpouring of love and support shows the deep influence he had in his short life.
Leif was a standout member of the Waupaca Baseball Organization, where his dedication and spirit shone brightly.
His coach, Brady Terrill, shared a moving tribute that captured Leif’s essence:
Leif’s love for sports wasn’t just a hobby. It was his passion.
He joined the team later than most, but Coach Brady and his teammates welcomed him with open arms, helping him grow into the athlete he became.
Leif’s mother, Kristy Schmoldt Berrens, responded with raw emotion, thanking Coach Brady for believing in her son:
“Thank you for taking a chance on Leif a few years ago. He started his “career” much later than most and you and the team welcomed him with open arms. Baseball and football were his passions. I was so excited for this season. He said you guys were getting his arm ready for some pitching and he was up to the challenge. So many questions, I’m so lost and broken.”
ViaHer words paint a picture of a boy eager to shine, a son whose dreams were just beginning to take flight, and a mother now suffering from unimaginable grief.
The Loss Has Shaken Not Just His Family But The Entire Waupaca Community
Leif leaves behind his devastated parents, Justin and Kristy Berrens, and four siblings who will forever miss their brother.
Friends, teammates, and neighbors have flooded social media with condolences, sharing memories of a boy who brought joy wherever he went.
One person wrote:
“Sending our deepest sympathies during such a difficult time. We are so sorry for your loss, Berrens family. Praying for you all! ❤️ The Westrick’s”
ViaOthers commented:
“Kristy, I am holding you all in my heart, and our family is covering yours in prayer at this very moment and moving forward —joined by many others who are lifting you up as well in our community.
There are no words that can ease the weight of such a loss, but please know you are not alone.
With love and deepest sympathy.”
To ease the family’s burden, close friend Sara Timm set up a Meal Train fundraiser.
The response has been overwhelming—over $10,605 has been raised toward a $15,000 goal.
The Meal Train begins Sunday, March 29, and will run through April 10, offering practical support as the Berrens family navigates this painful time.
Leif Berrens was a friend who lifted spirits, a teammate who inspired others, and a kid whose love for life was contagious.
His nickname, “Leif the Beef,” hinted at his strength, but it was his heart that truly defined him.
Though his time was cut short, his spirit will live on in the dugouts, on the fields, and in the hearts of those who knew him.
As the community gathers to honor Leif’s legacy, one thing is clear: his light may have dimmed, but it will never fade.
Rest in peace, Leif Berrens.
