“On behalf of my family, it is with the heaviest of hearts that I share that my younger brother, Matthew, passed away due to an accidental overdose over the weekend. My family and I are heartbroken and ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

What is most disappointing about the news is that Matthew was just 37 and had a significant portion of his life ahead.

The untimely and sudden nature of the death has rattled the sporting world, which is mourning his loss.

Matthew Is Also A Former Hockey Player

The sport of hockey runs through the DNA of the Spezza family, as Matthew also played hockey in his younger years.

Subsequently, he played as a goalie. He participated in 19 regular-season matches in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) from 2004 to 2006. The OHL posted a statement following his demise.

“The league sends thoughts and condolences to the Spezza family, along with those who were close to Matthew at this difficult time.”

He also played nine matches with the St. John’s Fog Devils in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and 14 games for the Flint Generals in the International Hockey League (IHL) from 2007 to 2009.

The death of Matthew leaves behind a large void in the world of hockey, which will be impossible to fill.
