Former Mooresville Junior HS Coach, Alfred Jurney Jones, 83, Passes Away, Leaving His Wife Karol And Two Kids Behind

The late Alfred Jurney Jones served as the teacher and coach of Mooresville Junior High School for 38 years.

Alfred Jurney Jones, who spent most of his career as a teacher and coach at Mooresville Junior High School, passed away at the age of 83.

The former Mooresville Junior High School coach, Alfred Jurney Jones, passed away on February 12, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Born on August 21, 1941, in Harmony, North Carolina, to late parents Paul Campbell Jones and Swannie Lee Jurney Jones, Alfred dedicated his whole life to education and sports.

He was renowned for his coaching and exceptional teaching skills, guiding many students to excel in their respective careers.

Moreover, Alfred also played basketball, baseball, and other sports during high school and college. His passion for sports and mentorship led him to begin his career as a coach.

In 1966, to Mooresville and began serving as the high school baseball, junior high baseball, junior high track, junior high football, and junior high basketball coach for over 12 years.

Being a basketball enthusiast, he also spent a decade coaching high school basketball and led his teams to conference championships in 1980 and 1987.

In addition to being a great coach, Alfred was also an amazing teacher.

Beyond coaching, he served as the director of transportation for Mooresville Schools for eight years before becoming the principal of Park View Elementary.

While serving as the Principal of Park View Elementary, Alfred received the honorable title of the 1999 Principal of the Year.

His contribution to the Mooresville community as a great coach and teacher will always be remembered.

The whole Mooresville community is mourning the loss of their beloved Alfred Jurney Jones, who was known not only for his career but also for his humble and kind nature.

In response to his demise, many of his loved ones sent their heartfelt condolences to his family and paid tribute to the late Alfred.

One wrote,

Coach Al Jones was a constant in the Mooresville Schools. So many of us in the 1980s remember him in PE, health ed, and sports teams. He was alway a approachable and had a sense of humor about him.

Similarly, another added, “Karol and family, I was so sorry to hear about Al. I enjoyed teaching with Al . He was a great coach and friend! My prayers are with you and family!

Alfred Jurney Jones Had Two Daughters With Wife Karol Jones

The late Alfred Jurney Jones is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Karol Jones, and his two daughters, Allison Jones Long (Derwin) and Jenny Jones Love (Chans).

Alfred was a great husband to Karol Jones and a proud father of Allison Jones Long and Jenny Jones Love.

In addition to his wife and daughters, left to cherish his life are his four grandchildren, Hannah Jimenez Long, Jesse Ann Long, Jurney Weatherman, and Collin Weatherman, and his two great-grandchildren, Carson Weatherman and Lilia Jimenez, also his step-grandson Scout Love.

While very little information about his wife is available, as she prefers to maintain a private life, his daughter and granddaughters took to their social media to pay tribute to the late Alfred.

His daughter Jenny Love shared some beautiful pictures of her with her late father.

Similarly, Alfred’s granddaughters Hannah and Jurney also expressed their sorrow for losing their beloved papa.

Hannah wrote on her Facebook page, “There aren’t any words that can adequately describe the loss of Papa. He loved, he was loved, and he will be deeply missed.

Regarding his daughter, Jenny Weatherman Love has been the Brand Merchandising Manager at Delhaize America since July 2007.

She went to Mooresville High School and graduated from Brookstone College of Business.

Moreover, her son Collin followed in his late grandfather’s footsteps in sports for a while and played for the Blue Devils team of Mooresville High School.

Alfred’s other daughter, , also attended Mooresville High School and earned her English Education degree from the University of North Carolina and her Library and Information Services degree from UNC Greensboro.

  • Alfred Jurney Jones was named Coach of the Year at two different conferences while coaching Mooresville High School.
  • He was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward P. Jones and David F. Jones, sisters, Paulette J. Driver and Violet J. Weisner, and his parents.
  • Late Alfred’s memorial service will be held on Friday, February 21st, at Cavin-Cook Heritage House, and a celebration of life will take place on Saturday, February 22nd, at Broad Steet Methodist Church in Mooresville.
