Athanasiou currently plays as a center for the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League.
The couple first went public with their relationship in a 2019 Thanksgiving post.
Since then, they have maintained a mostly private relationship, occasionally featuring each other on social media and appearing at sporting events.
Athanasiou attended the 2026 Meijer LPGA Classic to cheer for his girlfriend, where Nelly went on to win the event.
Athanasiou, born on August 6, 1994, in Ontario, Canada, is of Greek and Guyanese descent.
Earlier in his amateur hockey career, he played for the Toronto Titans.
Despite being drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in 2012, with a round 4 pick and 110th overall, he made his NHL debut with the Red Wings in 2015 and has since played for the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings before joining the Chicago Blackhawks.
Internationally, as part of the Canadian U-17 team, he won the gold medal at the 2011 World U-17 Hockey Challenge.
