Josiah Cobia, an 18-year-old senior at Rice Consolidated High School, died on Friday evening, April 11, 2026, after an accidental shooting at his home.

The tragic incident reportedly occurred around 5 p.m. at the family’s residence on 670 Donovan Street.

Josiah Cobia left behind his mother, Yuri Morales, younger brother, and other extended family members.

Following his demise, Yuri updated her Facebook profile featuring Josiah’s baby picture.

According to Eagle Lake Police Chief Donald T. Chaney, Josiah was in his bedroom with his younger brother, whose name is not shared because he is a minor.

The younger brother was showing Josiah a gun when it accidentally fired. The bullet hit Josiah, and he passed away from his injuries.

Authorities have confirmed that the incident was unintentional, and no charges are expected at this time. However, they are investigating how the brothers got the gun, as their mother did not know it was in the house.

Chief Chaney said, “It was an accident, and accidents happen. Neither of them had any business with it, but that’s something we’re going to look into, as far as a different investigation of how they got a hold of it.

Josiah Cobia was a vibrant member of Rice Consolidated High School, known for his involvement in both the Rice Raiders football and baseball teams.

Meanwhile, details surrounding his funeral services remain unknown. His family has yet to publish information about it.

During this time of ordeal, we offer our deepest condolences to Josiah’s parents, friends, and extended family.
