Indiana University opened the new year with a victory over Rutgers, defeating the Scarlet Knights 84-74 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in a matchup that outlined the importance of stars and who teams are missing.

Ace Bailey stole the show without freshman phenom Dylan Harper, pacing the Scarlet Knights with a career-high performance.

With Harper out of action because of an illness, Bailey stole the show for Rutgers, posting 39 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks.

His 39 points tied the school record for a freshman in a Big Ten game and ranked second-most recorded by an opponent at Assembly Hall.

Bailey added 16 field goals and a new school record by a freshman, proving himself as one who can shine when the rest of the team underperforms.

He was valuable, contributing more than half of Rutger’s total points as he shot an impressive 55% from the field, making 16 of 29 shots and with no turnovers in 38 minutes of play.

It was an efficient performance, as Rutger had inferior ball distribution, with only seven assists recorded throughout the game.

Rutgers felt the absence of Harper dearly because he is the leading scorer and the team’s most recognized playmaker.

Rutgers Must Adjust Without Their Best Guard Against Wisconsin and Ranked Teams!

Although it was a great night from Ace Bailey, with Rutgers having a pretty rough night, the elephant in the room certainly was the absence of Harper from the Scarlet Knights’ offense.

Into their next games against Wisconsin and other ranked teams, it’s still necessary for Rutgers to explore adjusting their approach sans its best guard.

Momentum needs to be built off Bailey while seeking other contributors to position the Scarlet Knights for a more competitive Big Ten this season.
