Nick Kyrgios, the outspoken tennis star and passionate basketball fan, recently highlighted a key difference in the playing styles of Boston Celtics stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

As an avid supporter of the reigning NBA champions, Kyrgios has often expressed his admiration for the Celtics and their dynamic duo, Tatum and Brown.

However, he didn’t shy away from pointing out where Brown falls short compared to his teammate.

Kyrgios’ Take On Brown’s Playing Style

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Kyrgios delved into the nuanced distinction between the two players.

He observed that while Jayson Tatum thrives with a laid-back and improvisational playing style, Jaylen Brown’s game requires a more decisive approach to maximize his impact.

Jaylen can’t play the same laid back way Tatum does, he has to be more decisive with what he wants to do, when he has the same tempo and relaxed kinda dribble mindset he isn’t as dangerous- Tatum has the ability to hit more improvised shots

He wrote,

“Jaylen can’t play the same laid-back way Tatum does. He has to be more decisive with what he wants to do. When he has the same tempo and relaxed dribble mindset, he isn’t as dangerous. Tatum has the ability to hit more improvised shots.”

Tatum, currently fourth in the league for points per game with an average of 28.1, has often been lauded for his versatile scoring ability and poise under pressure.

Kyrgios’ comments came shortly after Tatum’s crucial performance in the Celtics’ narrow 118-115 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, further solidifying his role as a cornerstone of the team.

Brown’s Rise Amid Criticism

Jaylen Brown, on the other hand, has been a pivotal figure in Boston’s success.

After being crowned the 2026 NBA Finals MVP, Brown silenced critics with his exceptional performances, particularly during the Eastern Conference Finals.

Despite being snubbed from the All-NBA selections, Brown averaged an impressive 29.8 points and 2.0 steals per game during the playoffs, showcasing his defensive prowess alongside his scoring capabilities.

However, as Kyrgios pointed out, Brown’s ability to adapt and thrive under various game scenarios differs from Tatum’s.

This distinction has fueled ongoing debates among fans and analysts about the duo’s respective strengths and contributions to the Celtics’ success.

Defending Tatum Amid Criticism

Nick Kyrgios has also been vocal in defending Tatum against critics.

When ESPN panelist Mike Greenberg questioned Tatum’s enthusiasm over Brown’s Eastern Conference Finals MVP win, Kyrgios was quick to dismiss the claims.

Bro is literally smiling and clapping. You guys are terrible.

Kyrgios fired back on X, standing up for the five-time All-Star,

“Bro is literally smiling and clapping. You guys are terrible.”

Tatum’s contributions, including a series-best average of 30.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game during the Eastern Conference Finals, underscore his value to the team.

Yet, as Kyrgios noted, Tatum often faces unfair scrutiny and is denied the widespread recognition he deserves.

Celtics Fans Hope For Continued Success

For Kyrgios and other Celtics fans, the success of their beloved team is a source of immense pride.

The reigning champions have had a strong 2026-25 season, sitting second in the Eastern Conference standings.

With Tatum and Brown leading the charge, Boston is poised for another deep playoff run.

And for Kyrgios, their journey is one he’ll passionately support, both as a fan and as a keen observer of the game.
