Renowned for his outstanding athleticism and illustrious NBA career, Derrick Rose’s sudden announcement of leaving the Memphis Grizzlies is creating shockwaves in the media. Despite some speculations and rumors, Derrick has not officially declared his retirement from professional basketball.

Derrick Martell Rose was born on October 4, 1988, in the Englewood area, Chicago.

Derrick’s presence seemed very positive for the team, as the Grizzlies had a successful season. He definitely helped to build good teamwork and also guided the young stars about dealing with injuries.

But unbeknownst to fans, the NBA superstar left the Grizzlies on September 23. According to some sources, the decision was mutual, and Derrick made a formal request to leave the team.

Derrick had reunited with Memphis after 16 years, signing a two-year $6.5 million contract in the 2026 offseason.

Unfortunately, the former MVP’s struggles with injuries limited him to playing just 24 games in the previous season, during which time he averaged 8.0 points, 3.2 assists, and 1.9 rebounds.

He generously gave up his $3.3MM 2026-25 salary to the Grizzlies. Recently, the veteran again created shockwaves among NBA fans with a cryptic Instagram post.

Soon after the video was posted, Rose’s former Grizzlies teammate Ja Morant responded to his video with a single rose emoji, which shows his appreciation for the guard.

The cryptic video left the fans and media speculating about Derrick’s next moves. Many sources and forums are claiming that Derrick might be retiring from professional basketball.

Derrick was passionate about basketball from a very young age, and his basketball journey began in his hometown of Chicago.

His zest for the sport led him to garner national attention as a “standout high school player” at Simeon Career Academy.

His journey at Simeon was undoubtedly legendary in high school basketball, as he led Simeon to two Illinois State Championships.

Rose’s athleticism, speed, playmaking skills, leadership, and calm demeanor helped Simeon gain national prominence.

After high school, Rose accepted a scholarship to play for the University of Memphis Tigers under the coach John Calipari.

During his time there, he led the Memphis Tigers to the NCAA Championship game, and his performance at that tournament earned him the Conference USA Player of the Year award.

After that, he declared for the 2008 NBA draft and was selected by the Chicago Bulls as the first overall pick.

His spectacular performance in the league propelled him to win the NBA Rookie Of The Year award in 2009. Moreover Rose was also the youngest player to win NBA MVP award in 2011. This undoubtedly solidified his status as one of the league’s emerging star.

Unfortunately, Rose’s monumental start with the Chicago Bulls was disturbed due to his injuries.

In 2012, he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee, and he was absent for the entire 2012-2013 season.

Consequently, he dealt with various other injuries, including a torn meniscus in his right knee, which again limited him from playing.

Despite all the hurdles and injuries, Derrick Rose made a name for himself in the NBA and is one of the most celebrated players.

In 2018, D Rose introduced a scholarship program, “The Rose Scholars,” to help students achieve a higher education.

His contributions to the NBA and his journey truly inspire the upcoming new generation of NBA players.
