University of Arkansas basketball head coach John Calipari has been married to Ellen for almost four decades, sharing a partnership both in life and in supporting his career.

John, who coached the Kentucky Wildcats from 2009 to early 2026, had the unwavering support of his wife, Ellen, who was affectionately known by the Wildcats as “Mama Cal.”

Ellen was by his side throughout his tenure at Kentucky, supporting him and the team through every game and challenge.

first met Ellen at the University of Kansas, where he worked as an assistant coach, and she served as a secretary in the Kansas athletics office.

At the time, Ellen had recently separated from her first husband, NFL player Nolan Cromwell.

Their shared passion for sports and an undeniable spark brought them together, and they began dating before tying the knot in 1986.

Now, 38 years later, their love remains as strong as ever, with their affection and humor keeping their relationship vibrant.

Ellen playfully refers to John as her “roommate,” highlighting their dynamic as best friends turned life partners.

On their 37th wedding anniversary, John a heartfelt post on Instagram, celebrating their journey with a picture and a touching caption:

Today, Ellen and I celebrate our 37th anniversary. I have been blessed to have her beside me through our journey. As a wife, confidant and mother, she has worked overtime to keep us all moving forward.

Further, they have consistently supported each other every step of the way. The former Kentucky coach once online how Ellen treated all the players like her own sons, stating:

She has treated all of our players over the years as her sons and was protective of them EVEN TO ME!! “Quit yelling at Demarcus!” Lol

Additionally, on John’s birthday this year, Ellen shared of him on Instagram, wishing him a happy birthday and affectionately referring to him as her “roommate.”

Furthermore, when John left Kentucky, Ellen even posted a goodbye honoring her husband’s decision and reminiscing on the enjoyable memories of her time in Lexington.

Together, they co-founded, where Ellen served as the vice president, reflecting their shared dedication to giving back to the community.
