While pursuing a Ph.D., she quit her plan of becoming a clinical psychologist and pursued her interest in cosmetics.
Despite having no beauty or business experience, she launched her company in 1999 from her single-bedroom New York City apartment.
Driven by her passion, she lauched her first product, a cheek stain, which debuted its first order at Henri Bendel in 2000.
Today, Tarte products are sold internationally, including in U.S. department stores and Sephora and Ulta Beauty stores.
Additionally, since May 2014, Japanese company Kose Corporation has held a 93.5 percent stake in Tarte Cosmetics following a $135 million acquisition deal.

Maureen Kelly was previously married to her late husband, Mark Ludvigsen, who tragically passed away in the 9/11 terrorist attack.
He was a bond salesman at the investment banking company of Keefe, Woods, and Bruyette and was a keen rugby football player.
A native of Rothesay, Canada, Mark was born on May 12, 1969, to his parents, Karl and Christina Ludvigsen.
His parents, along with him and his younger sister, Clare, moved to New Jersey, USA, when he was young.

The two had big plans for their future, but, unfortunately, Mark died at the young age of 32 while at work on the 89th floor of the south tower of the World Trade Center.
Following the tragedy, Kelly’s company faced significant challenges, but she regained her strength and worked for a better future.
However, she remarried in 2004 and now leads a joyous life with her husband, Scott. Together, they share two sons named Sully and Finn McDonough.
